5 Surreal Locales from London

Posted By Phineas Upham

London is a land full of history, and it can be surreal to stand in the center of it all. It was earlier this year that the remains of King Richard III were found in a parking lot in London. There are also numerous castles kept up by tourist money and tours, but the countryside has many secrets left for those who dare to explore them.

Royal Parks

The Royal Parks are full of ruins, statues and memorials that paint the picture of London history. Located in the capital, Royal Parks are free to visit and rival New York’s Central Park. It is especially amazing to wander those woods when the weather is foggy.

Aldwych Tube station

Opened in 1907, Aldwych station was a self contained station in the London Underground. Since its closure, it’s become the set of several films, including V for Vendetta and Patriot Games. The London Transport Museum still offers guided tours of this photogenic place.

Jeremy Bentham

For philosopher Jeremy Bentham, transparency was of utmost importance. It seems fitting that his body should be on display in the University College of London for all to see. Although the preserved man is now under lock and key after his head was stolen in a prank by the school’s medical students.

The Home of Karl Marx

It’s not common knowledge that Karl Marx lived in London, but there are several famous figures to discover in London’s Dean street. In addition to a home that housed the creator of communism for five years, you’ll walk the same grounds as a 21 year old Mozart and walk through the unofficial quarters of the French Resistance during World War II.
