Coming home from a long, relaxed vacation, only to find your home has been burgled, can ruin even the most memorable of vacations. Here are 3 tips on how to keep your home safe on vacation.
Ask a friend to help – You can ask a friend or a neighbor to keep an eye on your home, while you are away. It is best to give this person a key, so that he/she can bring your mail in, feed your cat, water your plants and rake leaves, etc. If you have a friend that is willing to move into your home for a few days, you may have more peace of mind. You could offer them something of monetary value once you return, for their trouble and time. It is important that you give your house sitter; your contact details in case of an emergency.
Don’t tip off criminals on the web – Everyone is blabbing and uploading pictures in real time on social media sites like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. It is best to hold off mentioning your trip or uploading pictures until you return. If you are leaving your answering machine or voice mail on, be mindful of the message you place on it.
Do tip off the police – Inform the police if you are out on vacation for a week or more. Some police officers will go out of their way to drive by your home when patrolling. This is often the case if you live in a small town, where everyone knows each other.
