How to De-Winterize Your Boat

Summary: Prepping your boat for Spring is an important task that every boat owner should consider.

After winter, you’ll have to work hard to get ready for the spring commissioning of your boat. By preparing it in advance, you’ll save yourself a substantial amount of prep time and headaches. Here are some ways how you can go about doing this.

Keep the Manufacturer’s Manual on Hand

Always keep your manual on hand before you do any work to your engine or boat. You’ll essentially need it to replace the fluids and the parts properly. Keep in mind that you should always consult the manual before you perform any services or maintenance on your boat.

Prepare the Engine

The engine is the running heart of your boat. It’ll probably take the most amount of time, so you should probably start here. If you didn’t change the oil since last season, take care of this first. It’s likely that your boat has run into all sorts of byproducts and buildup after being utilized for much of last year. Changing the oil can prevent corrosion and excessive wear which leads to loss of power or engine failure. You’ll also want to flush the cooling system and replace the antifreeze with the appropriate substitute as well.

Prep the Interior (If Applicable)

If you have a lower deck for your boat or even a place to just lounge, you’ll want to do a spot check to make sure everything is neat and tidy. Any cushions or furnishings that have mold or mildew build up should be thrown away and replaced with a replacement cushion.
